DIY Chai Tea [DIY]

DIY Chai TeaMany of us enjoy a chai at a coffee shop, but not many people knows what goes into making homemade chai tea (which is a redundancy since chai means tea but needed in America for clarification). This delicious drink can be made at home using black tea, whole spices, and milk.

Culinary weblog Foodista shares a recipe similar to those I've used in the past: Add two cups of water to a pan along with green cardamom, black cardamom, cloves, peppercorns, and cinnamon. When the water comes to a boil add two teaspoons of tea leaves and let them brew in the boiling water for four or five minutes. Remove to a simmer and add a cup of milk and two teaspoons of sugar. Let that simmer for a couple of minutes then turn the heat off and put a lid on your pot, letting the tea sit for two minutes. Strain the tea into your teacups and you will have a flavorful chai that is also way less expensive than at the coffee shop.

For full details and exact spice amounts visit the source link below. I recommend adding a few pieces of star anise to your spice mix and I usually use a cheesecloth "sock" to hold the spices when making chai instead of straining the resulting brew; you lose a little bit of the flavor, but it makes for an easier cleanup.
